The sun setting over Billy The Kid’s grave a few miles of south of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. . #thethirdmind After bidding fond, farewells to the Third Mind (and our excellent, very patient crew - sincere thank yous to Don, Jenny and Eric) my interstate comrade Frank Lee Drennen and I left Dallas and started driving home to California. Crossing the vast flat landscape of what had once been the Comanche nation, we took a pleasant, if out of the way, detour through funky Lubbock and later on a cruise on the wind blasted, Buddy Holly haunted streets of Clovis, New Mexico, so a visit to pay respects to young Billy seemed to be in order. I like to stop by there every few years just to see how the ‘kid from New York’ is holding up. As I drove, I started thinking of all the stuff coming down the highway for me. Like the long awaited reunion of The Knitters for one show only at the late Mojo Nixon’s final send off celebration on March 16 at The Continental Club in Austin. There’s also some big news I’m not supposed to mention yet regarding a new album being released early this summer and a long tour of the US of A. But you didn’t hear that from me. For now, though, I’m just driving west down a dark highway, still feeling the warm glow of a month and a half of thrilling Third Mind live performances that at one point looked like would never happen. Keep your faith in the music, the musicians and the audience and you never know where you might end up going. Too bad Billy The Kid wasn’t a guitar basher instead of a gun slinger. After countless snow storms, ice storms, rain storms, one rehearsal, one live radio performance, one cancelled show, one new transmission, one new set of windshield wipers, one lost pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, numerous checkered motel rooms, hundreds of treacherous highway miles and nine glorious, never quite the same each night shows, The Third Mind’s west coast tour has sadly come to an end. I cannot thank the amazing, soulful. selfless musicians; Michael Jerome Moore, Jesse Sykes, Victor Krummenacher, Mark Karan, Willie Aaron and Jack Rudy enough. I cannot thank our patient and wise road crew; Don Boles, Will Golden, Jenny Bendel, Phil ‘Philbillie’ Milner and Drac Conley enough nor can I ever thank our passionate, diligent, mighty manager Nancy Sefton enough. I also cannot thank enough all of you who braved the often inclement, sometimes dangerous weather, to attend these rare gigs. Because of everyone’s hectic, complicated, sometimes conflicting career or personal schedules, putting this limited run of special shows together wasn’t an easy task. So please accept my modest yet sincere thank you’s for making what was perhaps a crazy dream into a sweet, powerful reality. Music and playing music is my religion and you all took me to church every day and every night. This is a shot of my van resting peacefully between the deluges of rain up in the high Mojave desert. My van is dreaming of the upcoming Third Mind shows starting in late February in Houston, Dallas and Austin.
