Sometimes there are ghosts. Stayed Wednesday night at a beat up hotel in downtown Cleveland for the Third Mind’s show at the cherished Beachland Ballroom. Even though there’s now a corporate name on the low end hotel, it only took me a few moments inside the joint to realize that it was the old Swingo’s Celebrity Inn, Cleveland’s rock and roll hotel from the 70’s and 80s. Swingo’s was famous among musicians of that era because everyone from Elvis to Led Zeppelin had walked, partied and debauched in these hallways and rooms at one point or another. The Blasters stayed at Swingos three times back in the 80s and I honestly still remember the hangovers while my memories of our after show gatherings of bluesmen, punk rockers, groupies and hustlers in one Blasters room or another are a bit hazy and smokey. I’m sure everyone involved did at least one thing they regret on those distant nights at Swingos. I’m sure everyone who ever stayed at Swingo’s did something there they regret. It’s rock and roll, right? Swingo’s shut down sometime in the 80s and I’ve never set foot in the building since. As I hauled my guitar and luggage down the musty, dingy hallway on the threadbare, stained carpet to my room, I could definitely feel the beloved ghosts of Blasters Lee Allen and Gene Taylor as well as the much missed ghosts of our road crew, Wally Hanley, Tommy Pacheco and Shawna ‘Free’ Neptune, circling around me and teasingly asking me if I was up for another all night Swingo’s party. I wasn’t but, God, do I miss all those wild, sweet souls and those often insane times we shared. On Friday night, The Third Mind are blazing a psychedelic sonic trail at Daryl Hall’s nightspot out in the woods of Pawling, New York. I bet Hall And Oates lost more than a few brain cells and gained a few regrets after staying a night at Swingo’s, though If Mr Hall shows up to our show, I won’t ask him.
